Below the highest golf course in England, nestles the market town of Kington,
with its medieval grid pattern of streets and back lanes. The original settlement,
situated on the hill above the town, was recorded in the Domesday Book as Chingtune
- King's Town or Manor - and boasted a motte and baily castle.
Set
on this hill is the 13th century Parish Church of St Mary with its Vaughan Chapel
which contains the tomb of Black Vaughan and his wife Ellen Gethin the Terrible
- the haunted family home,
Hergest Court, visible in the near distance, proved to be the inspiration
for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in writing The Hound of the Baskervilles.
The golf course overlooks the gentle slopes of Hergest Ridge, made famous by the music of Mike Oldfield who lived in a house situated only about 50 yards from the golf club.
